Last night, I watched The Golden Compass. There was almost nobody in the threatre, and they had the sound turned up so loud I couldn't hear what was going on. It was loud to the point of distracting and painful!
At first, I was absolutely horrified. The special effects were incredible, and it seemed to have some huge-name actors (I just can't be sure, because I'm awful at remembering names and faces). But I couldn't follow the story -- it was throwing too much at me without answering the onslaught of questions I had. There was almost no set-up time to introduce you to how this other world works (i.e. -- they tell you that touching someone else's daemon is a horrible horrible thing, but they don't tell what would happen!). And that's not even touching the meaning of the storyline, which is blasphemous at best!
But I've slept on it (where I dreamt about it), and I've been thinking about it all day long. It's starting to grow on me, I think -- but I have to see it again. I do not want to pay the $7.50 to see it again, though, so I guess I'll have to wait until it comes out on DVD or something.
In any case, I am most definitely going to read the book! I just have to wait until after Christmas, in case anyone get me the book (I suggested it as a gift idea).
Anyway! What do you guys think of the movie? I'm not talking so much about their portrayal of daemons, since I know they're common in the therian community, but rather what you thought of the movie itself.

I'm yet to see the film, and from what you said, I think you need to read the book first, to fill in the facts, much like the most recent Harry Potter. (By the way it is called Northern Lights if you're not in USA. I was confused over that for a while, living in England.) Read the book. REEEAAD THE book. It good. ;D

*growls* It's a hit, or it should be anyway. It's a great book, and a brilliant series. Unfortunately, the christian/catholic community got their panties in a bunch over the plot. (so some fictional characters try to kill god? It's a book for crying out loud. Well, a book and a movie.) So, they went and told everyone not to see the movie, and lot's of people listened. What mindless sheep they all are! But, I won't get into a religious rant now, since no one likes to hear me when I rant.

I agree with Ritz (and I'll avoid a rant on religion as well). It's definitely a good series, with an amazing point. Because the government CAN kill "God", as it were. I found the creatures to be amazing as well. *shakes head* And all the Catholics/Christians ranting over this movie/book series only recalls me to their rants over The DaVinci Code. Another amazing book/movie. And ALSO fictional. I hate people who get their knickers in a twist because there are fictional books/movies out there that "defy god" and are "created by faithless people". *rolls eyes* I may also point out that (as I know it) the author of The Golden Compass series is Christian, and so is Dan Brown (who wrote The DaVinci Code and Angels & Demons). GET OVER IT! But that was a religious rant wasn't it? merde Oh well, to the point. I thought the movie was a big hit. It stayed high on the box office charts (and still is high on the charts). Only got knocked off first place by I Am Legend. And most people I know (besides the mindless religious sheep, as Ritz put it so marvelously =3) loved it. But you definitely have to have read the books to fully appreciate it. No movie can do any book justice, it just doesn't work that way. And same goes vice versa for books based off movies. ;A; so annoying ...yes, that's the end of my rants... for now

The thing that they are talking about with the touching the demons is just something the kids or adults made up so no one touchs others demons its weird i know. cause later on in the movie on of the adults grabbed one of the kids demons and it had no affect that i saw.i don't think it has anything to do with the story but then again I haven't read the book yet. The movie was great

Touching daemons: Anything that happens to your daemon, you can feel, yes? Your daemon is your soul, the most personal, private thing imaginable. Touching it is like being raped, only a hundred times worse. ...Though I haven't seen the film yet, so I haven't seen how well they portray this yet.
