Hello! My name is Moonwolf and I am a 54-year-old female. My theriotype is gray timber wolf. I have known I was therian since about age 3 or 4, though I didn't know there was a word for it. I remember seeing my first wolves at the local zoo, and experienced a shock of recognition, like spotting a family member in a crowd. As a child, I was experiencing what I believe were phantom shifts, where I would feel my body as one of a wolf, partially or wholly. When I first saw the movie The Wolf Man on TV around age 6 and learned the word werewolf, it seemed to come closer than anything I had heard of to my situation, though I was hardly violent. Mentions of my feelings to adults and friends has brought blank stares or negations, so there was no one I could talk to about this. All I could do was read all I could about wolves, go see them at the zoo, and watch the occasional unsatisfying werewolf movie.
I have had mental shifts as well as phantom shifts, wherein one could say I basically experience what I believe is the mindset of an older female wolf: the concern for the pack, the alertness to the environment and its potentials, more playfulness than my human self exhibits, for instance. I cannot walk in the woods while shifted as I once did, as I cannot walk well and use an electric wheelchair to get around. My wolf is a tremendous internal influence on me, and I experience myself commingled along a continuum from human to wolf, though not contherian. I found the online therian community in 1995 at age 41, and have been at least a lurker in a number of places since then. I remember vividly the day I found AHWw, and realized there were others like myself, and that I wasn't crazy after all!
I don't consider myself otherkin, though I am still rather unsure about just what otherkin are. The experiences of those I have talked to just don't seem to jibe with mine. I am just a gray wolf, who hopes to find in this community a place of thoughtful tolerance, where I may learn - I am always still learning - more about living as a therian.
