It's not often that I find a poem that highlights such a stark philosophical difference in people. I shared this poem with a coworker a while back:
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun into flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
"Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night" -- Dylan Thomas
I agree with this poem wholeheartedly! Never be content to leave the world untouched. With an animalistic rage, fight that which would silence us; let us pass into the next unheard of. Speak wisely until your words spark lightning in the hearts of others. Never let a chance go by to do a good deed for no other reason. Reach for the stars and the sky -- even the sun itself. Be it by curse or by blessing, do something in your life that has meaning!
My coworker disagreed with me on this. He would rather not rock the boat in this life. He thinks that it's better for society as a whole if each of its members simply does their job dutifully. I personally cannot help but see this as a communistic and inherently detrimental attitude! For it is communism that seeks to devalue the life of an individual by silencing them and relegating them to a life of no personal meaning. I, personally, refuse to accept that way of life.
